Needs Santa’s magic
Well, that’s just sad. Michelle Obama says, “We have no hope.”
I’m guessing the first lady doesn’t hold her hope in the only place we should. And that isn’t Jay Z and Beyoncé.
Here’s a hint: savior of the world.
Maybe the Obamas are thinking of joining their Hollywood friends and move to Canada? Funny thing, though, I haven’t heard of any of them actually leaving yet.
I think Mrs. Obama would benefit from a visit with Santa. I have it on good authority that Santa works closely with “the man upstairs.” Surely, Old Saint Nick could help Michelle understand the true meaning of hope.

Need decent roads
As I read the Tribune-Herald’s Kona International Airport article (Dec. 22), the chicken-and-the-egg question comes to mind: Which should come first — infrastructure such as decent roads and bridges, or the economy-lifting tourists?
I see our Department of Transportation has blessed the west side with the process of widening Highway 19 from Kona International Airport to Kailua-Kona. Yet we, the second-class citizens of the east side, get to keep our one-lane bridge on Kilauea Avenue and our $1 million halfway, part-time road to Pahoa.
Shame on the incompetent and wholly lacking forecasting of the growth of the Hawaiian Islands, in light of a massive throng of baby boomers looking to retire in something less than paradise.
I’m selfish. I want a strong, vibrant island economy, but only with adequate roads, bridges and services, not a DOT that’s always five to 10 years behind the need.
Sorry, my aloha is way down. I’m stuck at the top of Shower Drive waiting to turn right onto Highway 130 behind what looks to be about 40 vehicles.
